Abstract

On 14 August 1972 Pakistan was to celebrate twenty-five years of independence. What was to be the occasion for quarter-centennial celebrations is in danger of being transformed into a funeral. In view of the ongoing struggle for the freedom of the more populous eastern region of the country, it is not impossible that Pakistan will soon be a name like Austria-Hungary. In this context a quarter-century, although not a long period of history under usual circumstances, is surely a milestone in the life of this young nation. Whether the quarter-centenary is viewed as the beginning of another lease of life or as the end of an ill-fated experiment, it indicates a turning point of history. It is a time for sober assessment of the past events and policies which have led the country to this turning point.
