Will ‘English Disease’ Spread or Be Cured?

Abstract

We saw in Chapter 7 that the only hope for accelerated growth for Britain, whether within or outside the Common Market, would be her recovery from the ‘English disease’. We also saw in Chapter 8 that the prospects of Britain’s balance of payments depend on the relative extent to which the ‘English disease’ will develop in Britain and in the Common Market. While growth in Britain would not accelerate through the spreading of the ‘English disease’ abroad, her balance of payments might improve as a result of the spreading of the ‘English disease’ in other countries.
