Profits in the Levant Trade

Abstract

Three things were commonly said of Levant merchants by their fellow-citizens of mid-eighteenth-century London: that they were, in the main, very rich men; that the trade they carried on was an exceptionally lucrative one; and that their wealth and large incomes were the result of their exercise of monopolistic rights over the English trade with the Levant. The first of these was evidently true, for some of the richest of London merchants were engaged in Levant trade; the second statement will be examined in some detail in this chapter. As to the last one, the reader of this book should now have little doubt that it was false.
