Abstract

You may wonder why we have included Alibaba—one of China’s success stories and, at the time of writing, the largest Internet company in the world in a book about corporate failure. Our intention is not to predispose doom, nor to suggest trouble on the horizon. We think that the story of Alibaba and its main founder, Jack Ma, is fascinating: it is a positive illustration of China’s traditions in practice, and a large and growing force. We believe there is a lot to learn from its highly productive culture and unusual governance structure.
