Abstract

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) comprises ten countries south of China and east of India. Together, by 2011 estimates, ASEAN has more than 600 million people and a gross domestic product (GDP) of more than $2.2 trillion, the sixth largest GDP in the world.1 The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to be formed in 2015 is the natural next step in ASEAN’s economic transformation. The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) was established in 2010 to increase intra-regional trade by reducing all tariff barriers. The AEC’s main objective is to promote the free flow in the region of five essential economic drivers—goods, services, investments, capital, and skilled labor—to strengthen ASEAN’s competitiveness as a single production base.
