Norms and Women’s Political and Legal Rights

Abstract

Prevailing gender-discriminating norms and rules explain women’s lack of legal and political rights in the Arab world. Women’s access to political and legal rights varies according to the balance of collectivism and individualism in different Arab countries. Women, in general, have more rights in the more individualist countries such as in North-West Africa (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco), than in more collectivist countries (Saudi Arabia, Yemen). Within each country, women who are prone to individualism (e.g., rich, educated, employed women living urban regions) tend to exercise more rights than women in poor, illiterate households in rural regions.
