Abstract

Violence is one of the great social and economic challenges facing the United States today. The physical, emotional, and societal benefits that would flow from improvements in peace is self-evident to most, yet peace is often overlooked in the broader economic debate. Violence creates significant direct costs for both businesses and governments: it reduces productivity, inhibits economic growth, reduces profits, and holds back job creation. Even relatively small reductions in violence would result in substantial economic gains that could lower unemployment and increase the living standards of the average American citizen.
