Abstract

This chapter looks at how the high-cost credit industry has grown in a contemporary context. It discusses the wider points of the US consumer revolution, the part played by that revolution in raising the amount of dangerous debtfor a growing population, a close look at the academic studies that have dealt with the issue of high-cost credit and payday lending over the recent years with the suggestion that because the industry in the United States is far more bedded in the consumer credit environment it has provided a great source of information for academia. The chapter also compares the United States with Canada to see the extent to which the industry has taken hold there.
