Abstract

Our senses are the interface between our mind and our immediate physical context. They serve many functions, helping us to navigate our way, find food and recognize dangers. The sweet smell of strawberries attracts us to a fruit, while the bluish tinge of rotting food alerts us to a threat. But the relationship between our senses and our wellbeing goes beyond mere survival: we enjoy the lavender plains of Provence without foraging through them, leaving the bees to enjoy the taste. Aesthetics describe this appreciation of the world through our senses, and the desire to find beauty in our surroundings.
