Interpreting Luke’s Parable of the Ten Pounds via a First-Century Lens

Abstract

As has been noted, the parable of the ten pounds (Luke 19:12-27) has become a “poster child” parable in regards to Jesus’ teaching about management. Together with its sister parable of the talents from Matthew, these are perhaps the most-cited of all parables among contemporary scholars seeking to apply biblical scriptures to management theory and practice. Thus, if an interpretation of this parable using a first-century lens differs significantly from a conventional twenty-first-century interpretation, implications will be considerable.
