Abstract

I WAS RAISED IN WHAT MANY WOULD consider to be an at-risk family structure: My parents divorced when I was six months old; my mom and I lived in my grandparents’ home for eight years; and, due to financial constraints, my mom and I spent about a year living with a person she was dating. Yet, despite these structural differences from traditional family life, my parents and grandparents kept a laser focus on me and my education; and during elementary school, if it wasn’t for two key tutors who my mom made sure I had, I’m not sure I would have made it through socially or academically.
