Abstract

WHEN I STARTED THE YOUTH ACTION PROGRAM, the precursor of YouthBuild, in East Harlem in 1978, the term “social entrepreneur” did not exist, nor was I aware of any principles, technical assistance, business planning consulting firms, or social investors focused on “scaling social innovations.” Fortunately, foundations were attuned to finding people with good ideas for solving social problems, and social activism was understood as a good. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Ford Foundation discovered my work and supported it for decades.
