Abstract

A great deal of research has examined the causes and consequences of stress in organizations (Cooper & Marshall, 1980; Cooper & Payne, 1988; Cooper & Smith, 1985). This research has examined a wide variety of specific person and situation variables, most of which may be grouped into one of four broad categories: (1) stressful situations and events, (2) personality factors, (3) coping, and (4) symptoms of ill health. Most researchers would agree that these variables play a central role in organizational stress research, but few would agree on the process by which they are interrelated.
