Abstract

In a complex industrial society, work occupies a central role in the lives of all society’s members. It plays a major role in a person’s past, it determines the present, and it moulds the future. Not only does it dictate the quality of life-style, but it also provides a major means of personal identity and self-realization. So it is hardly surprising to find that life within complex organizations can prove to be a great source of stress. Because of this, a great deal of research linking stress and health has been focused on occupational stress (Cherry, 1978; Cooper & Payne, 1978; Cooper & Marshall, 1980; Cooper & Smith, 1986). Although the empirical studies in this field are mounting at a quantum rate in the scholarly journals (Mackay & Cooper, 1987), very little empirical work has been undertaken to understand the dynamics of the stress-health process.
