Abstract

Reviews of the predominantly American research on two-earner couples (i.e. couples in which both partners are employed) have generally concluded that this life-style has both costs and benefits (Piotrkowski & Repetti, 1984). Early research was concerned with the viability of this type of marriage (Rapoport & Rapoport, 1969), but more recently researchers have accepted its prevalence and attempted to quantify the costs and benefits in terms of occupational stress and well-being (Sekaran, 1983, 1985). Identification of the sources and manifestations of stress is a necessary first stage in improving the quality of life of two-earner spouses.
