Agricultural Cooperatives in Cuba: 1959–Present

Abstract

It may be said that cooperativism in Cuba is quite young because it did not begin developing significantly until after the 1959 revolutionary victory. Prior to that, the revolutionary program of Joven Cuba, the organization of followers of Antonio Guiteras1 in the 1930s, implicitly recognized cooperatives as an alternative for the social organization of production. Also, the 1940 Constitution contained references to state support for the formation of cooperatives. However, that was never implemented, and the de facto cooperatives that existed at the time actually were associations, because Cuba did not have any laws on cooperatives.
