Abstract

The evolution and development of shipping reflect the human relationship with both the physical landscape and the built environment of the Earth, which is mostly covered by water. This involves the study of various disciplines, such as geography, economics, engineering and the other social sciences, and its recent development is pivotal in affecting the development of ports, logistics and global supply chains. For this reason, this chapter provides a brief history of the evolution of modern shipping, and endeavors to understand the factors stimulating the evolution and development of shipping and its myriad manifestations, and how shipping affects ports, logistics and supply chains. In doing so, it offers readers a fundamental background on the major topic of this book.
