Abstract

The global industrial system, and the economic paradigm on which it is based, are increasingly considered to be unsustainable, and movements are emerging world wide to explore and advocate alternatives. The concept of sustainable development has gained considerable currency as a label for these efforts, in part because diverse political forces have managed to find space under its broad umbrella.
