Industrial Designers and the Challenges of Sustainable Development

Abstract

The challenge of sustainable development and new mobility facing the automotive sector implies a change in strategies among car manufacturers, government intervention (at the local or national level) and compliance with new regulatory frameworks. New mobility also has broader implications for society in general. The automotive sector’s profit model, founded on the internal combustion engine, needs to change to make room for alternative models (Freyssenet, 2009). New models are now in the experimental phase, and are based on a new conceptual approach to innovation and the social organization of mobility. The public sector is stimulating the private sector in setting up and encouraging new modes of transport.
