Abstract

It is argued by many in the field of sustainable development that the need to use cleaner, more energy efficient and less environmentally damaging technologies has never been more urgent (Goldemberg, 1998), particularly in relation to transport and mobility (Romm, 2006). The problems of global warming and pollution, as well as issues of energy security, have acted as a spur to a global search for alternatives to the internal combustion engine (ICE) (Jacobson, 2009).
