Abstract

The Asian financial crisis and its economic implications at both the regional and the global levels have been thoroughly analyzed. Nevertheless, the scenarios are still uncertain. In particular, it is far from certain whether, and if so for how long, China’s leadership will be able to stand by its choice of not devaluing the renminbi, on which it has built a good part of the country’s new credibility as the key regional stability player. It is equally unclear how and when Japan will be in a condition to overhaul its banking and financial system, and emerge from the critical condition which has kept Tokyo from playing a constructive and positive role in the crucial phase of the Asian crisis. However the situation may develop, the economic repercussions of the Asian crisis will continue to be a topic of analysis and international debate.
