Trade in Regions

Abstract

The question we examine in this chapter is whether trade within a region is greater than ‘normal’. This can be used for potential groups as a measure of whether the countries are suitable candidates to form a region, and, for actual groups, to measure whether there has been an increase in intra-regional trade following the formation of a region. The concept used, which will also be used for investment in Chapter 9, and other linkages in Chapter 10, is ‘intensity’. This is used instead of complementarity because it allows us to look at the changes in a region’s trade over time.
