Abstract

In July 1958, Willem Posthumus Meyjes and Olivier Giscard d’Estaing were officially appointed to head up what was still being referred to as the European business school. They set to work in the offices of the Paris Chamber of Commerce. With only 14 months separating them from the scheduled start, and one full-time secretary to assist them, they faced an uphill battle. The school remained a virtual entity, without premises or even a firm location, without professors, without a fixed legal status, without a selection process for students or a course outline to propose to them, and with only a portion of its funding guaranteed. Where should they start?
