Abstract

During the last decade, it is beyond question that developments in the world-wide financial services industry, such as new and successful competitors, the process of conglomeration, increasing cost and income pressures and improved capital standards, have led to an intensified profit orientation in financial institutions.1 Particularly because major shareholders ‘put the pressure’ on banks’ top management shareholder value management or more neutral ‘value management’ seems to be an indisputable objective for an increasing number of banks.2
