Abstract

A ‘scientific’ conference is designed for exploration, debate, and development of the subject matter, with individual participants free to put forward and test their own ideas rather than to conform to a common research design, or a common set of approaches. The papers selected from the conference are presented in this spirit, although each was conceived, selected and grouped so as to address a particular theme. The first set of papers addressed factors in the environment of EU business associations that cause variation in their abilities to unify their members interests and secure compliance with common goals. The second set of papers addressed factors of change, and case studies in managing change. The third group examined the special position of cross sectoral and employers organisations, while the contribution by Bill Coleman joins this chapter as a concluding one. This final chapter, seeking to bring together the main issues raised by the different chapters presented here, is the only one in the collection that was not presented at the conference itself.
