Abstract

This impact is of course directly related to the characteristics of the business sector. There may be few business sectors which affect directly or indirectly so many other sectors or citizens either as energy user or consumer of products derived from oil. Oil and gas account for 70 per cent of the EU energy supply. The industry provides employment (directly or indirectly) for some 2 million EU citizens. Contributes to 155 billion through taxation to EU treasuries. The sector is directly affected by developments and trends changes taking place in society in the world. Globalisation, liberalisation, privatisation. Geo-political changes. The emergence of NGOs and the ‘Civil Society’ concept. Environmental concerns and the sustainable developments philosophy. Internally concentration (mergers and acquisitions) and rationalisation. Information Technology, the knowledge society and society’s changing values and life styles.
