Abstract

Ever since the world economy started taking shape a couple of centuries ago, there have been extensive discussions on how the backward economies could industrialize belatedly and ‘catch up’ with the leading industrialized economies. More recently, since the end of the 20th century, there have been heated debates over whether or not the structure of the world economy has been shifting fundamentally towards a so-called ‘global’ economy. Almost everyone agrees that the structure of the world economy has been transforming in some way and to a certain extent. However, there is little understanding how the structural transformation of the world economy might affect the latecomer economies in pursing late industrialization.
