Abstract

The merits of diversity, like many other concepts in business, have been discussed widely in the popular press. This chapter presents two basic ideas which managers may find useful as they reflect upon diversity within their organisations. The first idea or concept is that employees bring a diverse range of talents into organisations and the notion of “fit” to the business situation often calls for the successful match of these employees to the “right” jobs. The Agents Model may provide a useful means of considering the notion of “fit”. The second concept introduces the notion of “ideas integration” instead of “ideas segregation” in which organisations are tapping into the rich knowledge resources of their work groups — in many cases located globally, throughout the world. The notion of effective listening is introduced as a cultural necessity to institutionalise the receptivity of new ideas. This chapter argues that receptivity of new ideas requires organisations to understand national cultural variations as one means of how employee values are shaped.
