Abstract

This chapter provides an empirical account of EU governance of the European electronics industry led by the ‘national champions’ or ‘European champions’, along with some examples of inter-firm or intra-firm strategic alliances. The chapter is mainly concerned with the background of the response of European governments and the EU to Korean major manufacturers by way of trade policies, as described in the next chapter. The second section examines the reality of the European electronics industry in a global electronics context, and the third section explains EU involvement with European R&D and technology policy. The argument of the concluding section is that European public policies, including S&T policy, are influenced considerably by European large firms, such as Philips, when it comes to EU-level Ramp;D projects.
