Abstract

It has been said, probably correctly, that man is the principle syllable in management, where (of course) man stands for mankind or people. Managing people can be difficult, demanding and demeaning. It can also be exciting, exhilarating and (always) exhausting. For every management problem there is a solution which is simple, quick, cheap . . . and wrong. Everybody wants easy, effective and efficient solutions to intractable problems. Trouble is, they don’t exist. But there are, of course, useful books, courses and seminars which help to understand and solve management problems. There is, however, often a negative correlation between what they promise and what they deliver.
