Abstract

The expression ‘international sourcing’ (IS) refers to the purchase of materials, components, and finished products from foreign suppliers. There are different types of sourcing according to the geographical extension of the supplying area, to the international distribution of the company production structures, to the existence of a strategy in which the production and business presence within the international markets match with the purchasing decisions. As described in this chapter, different names for this phenomenon correspond to different situations (‘import sourcing’ (Swamidass, 1993); ‘offshore sourcing’ (Kotabe and Swan, 1994); ‘global sourcing’ (Arnold, 1999); ‘worldwide sourcing’ (Monczka and Trent, 1992)) and each name is linked to a particular type of international purchasing.
