Abstract

This book has examined the nature and structure of the multinational enterprise, the dominant institution of the modern world. We have attempted to find out why the multinational enterprise is so important and we have tried to develop a theoretical explanation for its vitality. The theory focused upon the organization of the typical MNE and its internal market. It has been a difficult journey since the ramifications of internalization theory have been major and have led to conclusions which are frequently at variance with current public policy and thinking by both national governments and international organizations such as the United Nations. If the book has managed to challenge some of these current beliefs then the journey has been worthwhile.
