Internalization and the Transfer of Technology

Abstract

This chapter has as its focus the global strategies of the multinational enterprises (MNEs) as they affect the transfer of technology to host nations, such as Canada. Since these global strategies are determined at the head office by the US parent firm it is necessary to recognize internalization as a generalized theoretical model of the MNE, or at least to appreciate that such a theoretical perspective is available, before engaging in either theoretical or empirical analysis of technology transfer in Canada. A study of research and development (R and D) which ignores the global strategy of the MNE is like Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark.
