Abstract

To the difficult problems raised in previous chapters, technology may be the solution.1 Businesses are technology’s commercializers; their role is to bring critical know-how and ideas incorporated in technology to the market. Foresight is needed to identify the opportunities and bring the technologies to the market. Generic scenarios (see chapter 2)—romances, tragedies, and comedies—set aspiration levels (romances), establish worst cases (tragedies), and conceive of surprising transitions that must be managed (comedies). The purpose is not to forecast the future but to visualize many eventualities. It is not to accommodate necessity and submit to fate, but to influence the course of events. Rather than predicting the future, managers have to change it. They should take action to bring about the positive outcomes (romances), prevent the negative ones (tragedies), and manage the surprising ones (comedies).
