Abstract

The increasing organization of production chains across national borders offers new opportunities for economic advancement to developing countries, as they will have a chance to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in parts production, specific services, as well as final products. But under which circumstances will developing host countries actually be able to use participation in the global production networks of transnational corporations (TNCs) as part of a strategy for industrial upgrading and leapfrogging?
