Abstract

When analysing the German banking industry, the first striking feature is its more than proportional weight within the EU banking market. This can be illustrated by the following figures: 22% of the EU population currently live in Germany but have an income share of about 25%; the total assets of the credit institutions add up to more than 27% of EU value. The greatest difference lies in the number of banks, with 39% of all EU institutions being German banks. One of the most important properties of the German market, its fragmentation, can be seen from the last mentioned figure.
