Abstract

The wrong choice of expatriates for China may prove expensive. There are not only costs associated with repatriation/calling back or for contract termination of the unsuccessful expatriate, but even more important are losses because of wrong personnel decisions such as shrinking turnover, declining revenues and market shares, negative company image, distrust of the Chinese business partners and employees etc. Expatriates may fail because of incorrect assessments of the technical, economical and political surroundings, but also because of a lack of specific leadership and co-operation qualities or because of an insufficient information exchange within the different departments of their company.
