Selection superstitions

Abstract

There is a famous story that illustrates what psychologists call “superstitious behavior”. An animal psychologist had a lab full of pigeons he was using to explore the implications of behavior theory. Pigeons demonstrated they had shape and colour discrimination, and quite a bit more. They had become quite used to the old food-for-a-correct-answer routine.
