Abstract

The recent wave of globalization spurred largely by rapid advances and diffusion of Information and Telecommunication Technologies (ICTs) has led to irreversible changes in the world economy. Globalization now encompasses not only the financial markets, but also the whole gamut of the world’s social, political, economic and cultural milieu. This era of globalization commenced in the 1980s although it already began to rise significantly in the preceding decade. The process of globalization is rapid, complex and full of uncertainties and expectations. It is obvious that only those countries that invest in science and technology (S&T) are able to integrate themselves better in the global system and to effectively respond to the challenges posed by globalization.
