Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often regarded as the lifeblood of the economy. The same sentiment is felt in both developed and developing countries. They enable in bringing about innovation, increasing productivity, competition and creating value added activities. As the name suggests, they are highly flexible and are able to explore and experiment new ideas and practices in the quest for efficiency and effectiveness. Lee (2003) argues that SMEs form an integral part of the value system as downstream suppliers or service providers to the larger corporations in the overall production network. Realizing these crucial roles that SMEs play, governments are increasingly aware and have been serious about designing appropriate industrial policies to further harness the potential of SMEs as a catalyst to economic growth of the countries.
