Abstract

The recent growth in international business activities by entrepreneurial firms has been phenomenal, confirming the idea that international activity is a key element of entrepreneurship. Research studies suggest that, as a part of the entrepreneurial process, most entrepreneurs perceive international opportunities from the first day they start their business (Oviatt and McDougall, 1994; Zacharakis, 1997). Even for established firms, the decision to approach foreign markets is one of the possible expressions of entrepreneurship: foreign markets involve a liability of foreignness with a more or less pronounced risk element to cope with and at the same time disclose a wider range of opportunities to the firm. These opportunities are provided by discovery or enactment processes in foreign markets or may be the result of knowledge transfer from different locations and its recombination inside the organization, given the existence of combinative capabilities in the organization (Kogut and Zander, 1993). These issues in International Entrepreneurship (IE) have their foundations in Entrepreneurship theories, which focus on the role of entrepreneurs as actors and on the meaning and outcomes of entrepreneurial action.
