Absolute and Proportionate Poverty

Abstract

In almost all the countries, the absolute number and the share of population living below the country-specific poverty line have been declining. Some countries have, however, been more successful than others in annihilating poverty as the extent of the decline in poverty ratio widely differs across the developing world. What obstructs or facilitates poverty reduction is a matter for a separate discussion elsewhere in this book. The evidence presented in Tables 6.1 and 6.2 is self-revealing and demonstrates that the incidence of poverty, as defined by the countries themselves, is tending to diminish in terms of both absolute number and the proportion of poor people to the total population. While Table 6.1 depicts the poverty scenario for a few countries till the 1980s, Table 6.2 shows the recent picture for the early 1990s which will be briefly discussed below.
