Abstract

In recent years many commentators have emphasised the need for an inter-disciplinary understanding of the multi-faceted nature and impact of MNCs1 that combines insights from different bodies of thought. In this chapter several theoretical approaches are drawn on and three structural changes (international competition, technological change, and regional integration) are identified, which are argued to be the key drivers of change in international business and are central to understanding the implications of MNCs for economic development.
