In: Finance: Servant or Deceiver?

Abstract

The euphoric years saw the gradual development of conditions in which finance could rapidly emerge as one of society’s main organizing principles. In the course of this process, specialized firms run by people with a specific world view and philosophy of action helped the ‘spirit of finance’ and financial techniques to spread throughout society. A favourable political, regulatory and technological climate triggered a self-perpetuating process fuelled by the growing efficiency of enterprises and the spread of a world view that justified financialization.
