Abstract

What if it could be shown that if fisheries were well managed, marine resources could probably be harvested at todays or even higher levels in the long term? In any case, a certification scheme is an option to counteract the strong pull of over-exploitation. This means creating a worldwide standard for sustainable fisheries against which fishers could be assessed and certified. Products from fisheries that meet these standards would be eligible for the certifier’s logo on their packaging, thus providing assurance to consumers that their products were not the result of environmentally destructive practices. To put into place a credible certification standard, however, would require the cooperation of several actors: scientists, NGOs, manufacturers, retailers, catering outlets, and fisheries.
