Abstract

Julie Taymor is the critically acclaimed director of Broadway shows, films and opera. Her studies of mythology and folklore at Oberlin College in Ohio, her attendance at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, and her early exposure to Asian theater in Sri Lanka, India and Japan led to her fascination with puppetry and experimental theater. Her Broadway adaptation of the Disney film The Lion King earned her two Tony Awards and made her name a household word. This success was followed by directing several plays, including Titus Andronicus by Shakespeare and the film adaptation Titus, the film Frida about the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and opera productions such as Mozart's The Magic Flute and Grendel, a new modern opera.
