Abstract

Daniel Libeskind, an international figure in architecture and in design, started as a virtuoso musician. Leaving the field to study architecture, his early career was academic, which changed when he won two high-profile competitions – The Jewish Museum in Berlin and The Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, England. He rose to great fame in 2003 after receiving a commission to create the master plan for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center. He received the 2001 Hiroshima Art Prize – an award given to an artist whose work promotes international understanding and peace, never before given to an architect. His ideas have influenced a generation of architects and those interested in the future development of cities and culture.
