Vietnam: The New China?

Abstract

Vietnam is the next China, or at least that’s the claim. But it isn’t. Its population at 85 million makes it the world’s thirteenth most populous country but it is still nowhere near China’s billion-plus population. A more realistic sobriquet is that it is the next Guangdong, which had 110 million people in 2005 — 79 million permanent residents and the rest internal migrants.1 It means that Vietnam is not set to be an economic colossus on the world stage but it will be a significant economy.
