Abstract

China’s ascent towards becoming the leading foreign investment destination of the global economy was unequivocal by the mid-1990s. It has since elicited innumerable discussions, research and, of course, international media reportage. The fact that a communist country would manage to get massive inflows of foreign investment was hailed by many, in academia and outside, as spectacular. When the discernibly positive outcomes of trade and investment liberalization in China became manifest it was described by most who analyzed it as nothing short of impressive. As is invariably the case, hype is followed by a critical examination and this chapter presents important insights that emerge from China’s FDI—export-led model.
