Abstract

From the late 1980s, moves to strengthen regional consolidation have gained momentum in various parts of the world. These moves led to the creation of the European Union (EU), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Mercosur. These moves stimulated regionalism in East Asia with the launching of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 1989. However, a regional grouping involving East Asian nations alone did not evolve in the early 1990s, although practical economic linkages through trade and investment deepened and expanded.
